Being Dorky is Chic! Redefining Authenticity & Confidence
To be passionate is to be dorky, to obsess over your niche is quite dorky.
A word I've found myself drawn to within the last couple of years—a word that is misunderstood and often overlooked. Considered unfashionable according to the internet realm, but it's proven that you should never take advice until you've gathered some sort of firsthand information yourself. That's why I'm here…to tell you that being called dorky is genuinely one of the best compliments you could ever receive, and being dorky is quite chic! In fact, some of your favorite icons, inspirations, and leading influences throughout history and today would be considered dorky.
With wanting to fit in in school to try and confirm to the standards that have been placed in our upbringing from those around us, society, and through being exposed to a diverse range of media. Going outside of the norm instead of confirming to what others were doing, wearing, acting, etc. was mis-looked and turned into a word of hatred and shame. During those times, it truly was something no one wanted to be called and could even be a word that still has some sort of negative condensation for you.
But let's take a look at what dorky truly means, which is being your authentic self. To be yourself wholeheartedly and show up in every occasion as you, which is the biggest superpower of all. It's sad that as a society, we have turned that into a word full of misunderstanding to make others feel like their niches or interests are not normal, even with something as simple as loving to read or playing a certain video game.
When I look into those that inspire me the most, they all are intelligent, driven, sophisticated, and quirky people, quite dorky. People that obsess over a specific niche, hobby, or internet realm because they genuinely enjoy it. The ones that were overlooked until they reached some sort of fame or following in some sorts. A perfect example of this is Lady Gaga; people hated her during college because she was quite dorky or annoying or not like other people until she became successful.
What baffles me the most is to tell you that being dorky and staying dorky makes you you, and there truly is no such thing as dorky but rather authenticity. Use it to your advantage and reclaim that word and see it for how liberating it is and redefining what it means to you.
The world around you will tell you that it's not okay to be different, but remember that often those that were the dorky ones or the outcasts are often the ones that change any type of industry and are the leaders of our world today. I hope for others to rethink the beliefs that we put on things and redefine those truly to what they actually mean.
therefore, stay dorky<3
